Hantsport Goes Wireless

Hantsport, Nova Scotia

The Town of Hantsport is the first municipality in Nova Scotia to provide high-speed wireless Internet services to its citizens and visitors through its own network, Hantsport-MESH

The launch of the new network on July 1st, 2009 is timed to support Hantsport’s annual Canada Day Celebration which is a long-standing and very popular event in the Annapolis Valley.

This year, visitors to the Hantsport Memorial Community Centre grounds and the Town Centre will have access to Hantsport-MESH based on the work of the Valley Community Fibre Network and through CISCO wireless technology.  Future development will extend service throughout the Town.

Hantsport-MESH has been developed to offer basic high-speed Internet browsing and email services to the public, free of charge.  The Hantsport-MESH network does support secure SSL connections (encrypted) for online banking and e-commerce, and remote connection to your home office, however the public is advised that a public network is not as secure a home-based Internet service.

The free service in the Town has been developed to offer a limited type of high speed Internet service on a public network. It is not intended for online gaming, extensive downloading of various types of large size media files, or services that require a lot of dedicated network bandwidth.  For these uses, the Town recommends using your home-based Internet service.

The Town of Hantsport, incorporated in 1895, is a Town proud of its history and with the launch of Hantsport-MESH it is proud to support innovation and sustainable growth in rural Nova Scotia.

Construction Work and Parking Restrictions

Notice to the Residents of Hantsport

Construction Work and Parking Restrictions in the Upcoming Season

The Town has awarded a contract for the street and in-ground infrastructure renewal of approximately 1200 feet of Prince Street below Oak Street.  This work is scheduled to begin the week of July 6th and last approximately 6 weeks. During this time truck traffic entering and exiting CKF and Minas Basin will be rerouted from Prince Street to William Street.

Given traffic volumes, the width of the affected streets and that the intersection on Main Street and William Street was not designed to accommodate the wide turning radius of large 53 foot trailors, the traffic authority has issued the following rulings during construction:

1. Parking will be prohibited on the West side of Main Street across from the Legion.
2. Parking will be prohibited on the East side of Main Street from the intersection of Main Street and School Street through the intersection of Main Street and William Street.
3. Parking will be prohibited on the West side of Main Street in front of the Scotiabank building.
4. Parking will be prohibited on the North side of William Street.

Status of Construction Tenders for the Upcoming Season

Responses to the street renewal tender offers that were issued earlier this spring were far higher than had been estimated. This has caused Town Council to scale back the infrastructure works for the summer. Council faces loosing the federal and provincial shares of monies allocated for Prince Street if the project is not completed this year. In lieu of this, Council has decided to move ahead with a scaled back portion of the Prince Street project this year and re-tender for other street renewals at a later date.

Funding for the truck route has been announced verbally but the Town has not received written confirmation. Work continues on finalizing the designs and obtaining environmental approvals. Town Council will keep the citizens of the Town informed as further developments occur.

Bicycles Traveling the Walkways around the Town Office

There have been a number of close calls with children on bicycles exiting the Town Office walkways onto the parking lot and almost colliding with cars exiting the parking lot. We ask that parents discourage this practice as a safety precaution.

Should you have any questions or concerns on these matters please do not hesitate to contact the Town Office at 684-3211 or by e-mail at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Hantsport in Brief...

Population: In 2006, the population of the Town of Hantsport was 1191 persons.

Recreation facilities: The Hantsport Memorial Community Centre provides a centrally located focal point for sports and entertainment within the Town. During the summer months baseball, soccer, tennis, swimming and a playground are available on the grounds. In addition, the centre functions as the main stage for the Town's annual July 1st celebrations.

Transportation: The Town of Hantsport is very well served with a transportation system. The road network provides easy access to other points in the province. The main arterial roads are Route #1 (old Halifax Highway) and Highway #101. These highways provide quick and easy access to the Halifax-Dartmouth metropolitan area as well as points further west in the Valley. A terminal bus service is located in Falmouth.

Effective September 4, 2007 a public transit bus service is available from Hantsport to Windsor and west from Hantsport to Digby. The Halifax International Airport provides freight service to locations within the Town and is located 1 hour from Hantsport.
